Trying to NOT let my emotions get the better of me but I think that is already far gone. I am traveling from RIchmond, VA to Washington DC today by rail. In my urban exuberance I wanted to bring my bike along with me so that I could arrive in DC and scoot around town.
What I come to find out was a rude awakening. In Virginia all the Amtrak trains are (empty) and without any accommodations for bikes. The logic of this? Well, there is NO logic. I am slapping myself in the face for being so naive to think that this country was in the least bit civilized.
I found this blog that does not just rant, like I did on twitter to Amtrak all morning, but also offers some kind suggestions. I will add one: take out some seats in a few cars and simply offer space for 2-4 bikes reservation required. With some hooks, bikes can latch in vertically and by locked up in the process in the already existing infrastructure.
Is Amtrak listening?
